Birdathon 2024

The Solitary Sandpipers (John & Cindy McKee) traveled from South Padre Island back to the Donna/Weslaco area and logged in a whopping 125 species.

The Wingbeats stayed mostly in Cameron County and had 89 species for their tally. This year, the team consisted of Madeleine Sandefur and Joyce Hamilton.

The Wandering Warbler (our Bird Walk guide) a.k.a. Angelina Vasquez began at Frontera for the Saturday bird walk and counted 34 species at our site. Her total count for the day is 75 species.

We would love for you to support these birders in their endeavor to help Frontera by contributing a certain amount per species or a lump sum for one or more of the teams.

Call us at 956-968-3275 or stop by 1101 S. Texas Blvd. in Weslaco to make a pledge or to find out more about the team members. Remember that we are closed on Mondays!

Dine on the Lawn 2024

šŸŒžšŸ–ļøSummer is herešŸ–ļøšŸŒž

ā€œDine on the Lawn: 50 Amazing Years!ā€ Kicks Off Fronteraā€™s 50th Birthday Celebration

Frontera Audubon Society was organized in December of 1974. Throughout 2024, we will be celebrating our fifty years of existence with a variety of activities. The first was our annual spring fundraiser on the evening of Saturday, April 27th.

More than seventy-five people gathered on the lawn behind the Skaggs House to enjoy the evening and hear stories of the founding and history of our organization. The Soup Doctors served a delicious meal and jazz music was provided by the RGV Jazz Collective. Silent auction items from a Talavera planter to a Doggie Goodie Bag to a two-night stay at an Air BnB in Port Isabel were bid on by the attendees.

Stay tuned to our Instagram and Facebook to see when the next event is to take place!

The Rarities

What a wonderful five months at Frontera! From December 2, 2023 to the middle of April, we were ā€œhomeā€ to two rare birds: a Golden-crowned Warbler and a female Crimson-collared Grosbeak.

Needless to say, we had an influx of visitors coming to our site to see the two birds as well as all the Valley specialty birds that hang out here each winter. (There was actually a second Grosbeak for a couple of weeks, an immature male.)

We want to thank everyone that came to visit (one or more times!). It was so much fun seeing the excitement of those getting their glimpse of the bird or taking a good picture. There were many that came here for the first time, but also many that we hadnā€™t seen since before COVID. We had people who had been here in 2016 for our Blue Bunting and even a few who had not been here since the famous ā€œthree birdsā€ in 2004-5! It was so nice to see you all again.
