What is CSA?
Community Support Agriculture know as CSA originated in Japan in 1960’S and Europe in 1970’s and began in the United States in the 1980’s. This “movement” provides a direct link between consumers and farmers. The goal of this relationship is to provide solutions to the problems of small farm survival, food quality, nutrition, community building, sustainably and quality of life. This direct marketing method can benefit both farmer and consumer in many ways.
CSA is sometimes known as “subscription farming,” and the two terms have been used on occasion to convey the basic principles. In others cases, however, use of the latter term is intended to convey philosophic and practical differences in a given farm operation. Subscription farming (or marketing) arrangements tend to emphasize the economic benefits, for the farmer as well as the consumer, of a guaranteed, direct market for farm products, rather than the concept of community—building that is the basis of a true CSA. Growers typically contract directly with customers, who are called “members” and who have agreed in advance to buy a minimum amount of produce at a fixed price, but have little or no investment in the farm itself. A grower could maintain small farm profits by selling low cost memberships to customers who then were allowed to harvest crops at below market prices.
How it Works
CSA arrangements are based on a contractual agreement between a farmer and a consumer. This not only provides the farmer with capital to start their business, but who ensures a guaranteed market for their product. Members can rely on fresh, local produce throughout the season.
Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables; interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week or every other week throughout the farming season.
As each crop comes in, throughout the growing season, members receive their share once a week. The size of shares varies in quantity and variety.
6-8 different vegetables, harvested and packaged and delivered weekly (Example: a bunch of carrots, some squash, beets, radish, lettuce cucumbers and tomatoes) they become ready to harvest.

Membership
Members consist of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes either legally or spiritually, the community’s farm, with the growers, and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Typically, members of “share-holder” of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the anticipated casts of the farm operation and farmer’s salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production. Members also share in the risk of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. By direct sales to community members who have provided the farmer with working capital advance, growers receive better prices for their crops, gain some financial security, and are relieved of much of the burden of marketing
